Guayanilla

In the tiny town of Guayanilla, a mixture of African, Chinese, Spaniard and Taino Indian intermingled to create a long line of willful women. Strong, opinionated, unforgiving . . . but we're good cooks and have great legs!

I've fostered a childhood crush since I was about 2. (Don't ask, I'm still not telling!) Suffice to say that plenty of times through my life I've dreamed of walking hand in hand through the tiny plaza -- like in the stories of such courting during my grandmother's days...

And there was a time when I fantasized of a big, white (yes, I'd dare!) wedding in the pretty little church where generations of González women were baptized, married and mourned in the name of the Mother, as they say.
