Luquillo

Luquillo has my favorite beach in the world. I love it because of its Zen-like beauty -- simple and graceful. First, it has the prettiest green waters, like flowing, liquid emeralds. The white sand is silky. The plush, green mountains and rain forest can be seen at a distance to the north.

Generally, the sea here is serene and you can walk pretty far out and have the still waters at waist level (knee level, if you're normal height!). At Luquillo Beach, the sea and heaven meet at the endless horizon.

On my last trip to the island, I was not able to go to Luquillo Beach. I did visit my great aunt's country home, guarded fiercely by George the Goose.

After the last hurricane, they got a whole new set of wild flowers growing in their front yard. Pretty funky stuff, some might even be native to the forest.

If you visit Puerto Rico, I suggest you do a day trip to explore El Yunque -- the tropical rain forest -- and spend the afternoon at Luquillo Beach. There are food kiosks along the shore by the main road: have a lobster taco!
