Adjuntas is a mountain town of around 19,000 inhabitants (2000 census). It is located some twenty to thirty minutes northwest of Ponce on State Road 10 (PR 10). Other neighboring communities include Yauco, Guayanilla, Peñuelas, Utuado and Lares. The land area of Adjuntas includes some of the largest coffee plantations on the island. The patron saints for Adjuntas are "San Joaquín" and "Santa Ana". Patron saints day is celebrated on August 21st.
Adjuntas is popularly known as Ciudad del Gigante Dormido or City of the Sleeping Giant, from the shape of its mountain skyline, high up in the Cordillera Central Mountain Range. Adjuntas has a cool and pleasant climate. It is also known as Land of Lakes or Tierra de Lagos from the many water holes in its mountainous terrain.
Adjuntas is essentially an agricultural community. It is said to be the largest citron (cidra) producer in the world. Its coffee is reputed to be among the best on the island. Adjuntas features one of the highest mountain peaks on the island, Monte Guilarte. Some large copper deposits are found in the Adjuntas-Utuado area. Efforts to exploit mines commercially have failed in the past due to popular outcry from conservationist groups.
The high elevations around Adjuntas are also linked to many stories about UFO sightings. In the early 1990's, frequent reported UFO sightings brought hundreds of curious people from all over the island as well as local news media to the Adjuntas countryside. Many people reported seeing strange lights in the sky, originating in the Adjuntas mountains and traveling into the Lajas valley to the southwest.
A well-known landmark around Adjuntas is Casa Pueblo, a 19th Century structure which was saved from destruction by a not-for-profit organization established by local citizens to acquire the property. The organization has evolved to developing and operating an ecological resort, a coffee plantation and the protection and maintenance of Bosque del Pueblo, a forest located within the municipal boundaries.
Lake Garzas and the Monte Guilarte Forest Reserve on PR Road 518 attract visitors from all over the island. Monte Guilarte (elevation: 3,953 ft) has excellent trails for hiking and interacting with nature. Bring your camera: the views are breathtaking. On a clear day you can see both Ponce and San Juan without the aid of binoculars.
