Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico

WXPort
Aguas Buenas is a small mountain town of 29,000 inhabitants (2000 census), some fifteen minutes away from Caguas. It is popularly known as Ciudad de Aguas Claras or City of Clear Waters, from the purity of its fresh water springs.

The area is mostly agricultural. However, in recent times many people have acquired some of the farmlands to build weekend or vacation homes. As a result, real estate values have increased and the commercial importance of its agriculture has decreased somewhat.

The roads leading to Aguas Buenas from Caguas and from Rio Piedras host many weekend entrepreneurs who roast whole pigs over open pits (Puerto Rico's famous Lechón Asado. On weekends, these roads are frequented by many people from neighboring vicinities shopping for roast pork. The additional traffic and the possibility of over-imbibed drivers in these twisty mountain roads require that weekend drivers in the area be extra careful.

The patron saint for Aguas Buenas is "Los Santos Reyes", celebrated on January 6.
