La Borinqueña was adopted as the official anthem of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico) in 1952. The lyrics in the current version were written by Manuel Fernández Juncos, while the original music is said to have been written by Félix Astol Artés and later converted into a march by Ramón Collado.

A recent popular song named "Verde Luz" and written by a contemporary author/singer named Antonio Cabán Vale (El Topo) is gaining much popularity. It has been suggested that "Verde Luz" might someday replace "La Borinqueña" as the National Anthem of Puerto Rico.
