Arroyo Just a few minutes east of Guayama, this small coastal town of 19,100 at the time of the 2000 census, used to have an active port due to the production of sugar from sugar cane in its Central Lafayette. The reduction in agricultural activity and subsequent closing of Central Lafayette has resulted in considerably less economic activity for the area.

One of the best kept secrets about Arroyo is the beauty of its beaches. Punta Guilarte Beach, off PR 3 east,is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. A government-run vacational resort, Punta Guilarte, is located on the beach.

Samuel Morse is reported to have conducted many of his experiments regarding the telegraph from his home outside Arroyo, Hacienda Enriqueta, to the town's main street which now carries his name.

The patron saint for Arroyo is "La Virgen del Carmen", celebrated on July 16.
