Barranquitas, Puerto Rico

WXPort
Barranquitas  is a town of 28,900 inhabitants (2000 census). It is located high in the mountains of central Puerto Rico. Access to town is via roads of seemingly endless bends, curves, slopes and all the related motoring hazards. Despite this, many people from all over the island visit frequently, to follow some of the Festivals held around town throughout the year. Artisans from all over the island expose their creations in a Fair held in July each year.

Luis Muñoz Rivera, a native of Barranquitas, is now buried in the Barranquitas Cemetery, along with his son Luis Muñoz Marín, the island's first elected governor. Both men are among the most revered in Puerto Rican history. They have given Barranquitas its name Cuna de Próceres or Cradle of Great People.

Barranquitas can be reached by following PR 156 West from Caguas, passing Aguas Buenas and Comerío. Allow about one hour for the trip from Caguas. Alternate routes require a map and the possibility of having to stop and ask for directions.

The patron saint for Barranquitas is "San Antonio de Padua", celebrated on June 13.
