Bayamón
La ciudad del chicharrón

Bayamón, Puerto Rico

WXPort
With a population in excess of 224,000 (2000 census), Bayamón is one of the most important cities on the island of Puerto Rico. Its proximity to the San Juan Metropolitan Area permitted an early development of Bayamón. Some of the earliest residential projects in the 1960's were built on its plains. Similarly, many commercial and industrial concerns selected this city for their operations. Municipal revenues from these sources have permitted community services and infrastructure to develop at a similarly fast pace.

Bayamón is west of San Juan on Carretera 2 and on toll expressway 22, Expreso de Diego. Bayamón is also adjacent to Toa Baja, Cataño and Guaynabo in the north; Comerío and Aguas Buenas to the south, Guaynabo to the east; Toa Baja, Toa Alta and Naranjito to the west. The patron saint for Bayamón is "La Santa Cruz", celebrated on May 3.

Bayamón is known for its chicharrón or bacon rinds which are sold from wheelcarts in its busiest streets and sidewalks. Its Parque de las Ciencias Luis A. Ferré attracts visitors from all over the island to its combination science museum and zoological park. Among its attractions is a note-worthy, imaginative recreation of a make-believe town featuring many of the characters created in his lifetime by comedian José Miguel Agrelot.
