Beaches
Puerto Rico's nearly 300 miles of sunny shoreline includes some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Some are calm; others are world-famous surfing destinations. Some appeal to family groups, while others attract crowds of young athletes. Some are lined with condominiums and city skylines; others with coconut palms and mangroves. Some beaches have been provided with facilities such as changing rooms and lockers, cafeterias, parking lots, lifeguards and other creature comforts. Whether you're longing for a secluded stretch of sand or a lively, palm-lined playground, you're bound to find it in Puerto Rico.

The best time of the year to enjoy the Puerto Rican beaches is, of course, the summer, when the water is at its warmest. However, there are few climatic differences between the summer and any other time of the year. The most popular beaches are visited year-round. It is not unusual to see tourists sunning themselves in the beach in ":winter" months such as January and February.

Balnearios The most sophisticated of public beaches are called balnearios. There are more than a dozen state-government-maintained balnearios around the island. Most of these balnearios have parking lots, lifeguards, changing rooms with lockers and showers, snack bars, picnic areas, and in some cases, playgrounds and camping facilities. Most are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the summer, and Tuesday through Sunday the rest of the year.
