throughout the island. Botánicas play an important part in many Puerto Rican superstitions and
traditions.
They are specialized shops that retail a variety of
articles such as statues and pictures of saints and other venerated
figures of religious faiths; natural herbs; folk remedies; amulets; candles;
prayer books; rosaries; beads. The concept has been modernized to add
health foods and related items.
Even in modern times of better educated, more skeptical people, there seem to be enough believers around to support and keep this industry alive and thriving.
