Cayey, Puerto Rico

WXPort
Cayey , with a population of 47,300 (2000 census), is one of the fastest growing cities in the center of the island. It was founded by Spanish settlers in 1773. Prior to that, the area had been inhabited by Taíno Indians.

The patron saint for Cayey is "Nuestra Señora de la Asunción", celebrated on August 15.

Cayey's claim to fame comes from Las Tetas de Cayey, a mountain range which features two peaks that from a distance resemble female breasts. Las Tetas and Monumento al Jíbaro, a tribute to the Puerto Rican agricultural worker, are visible from Expressway PR 52 which runs from San Juan to Ponce. There is a rest stop at the monument with great views and photo opportunities.

Cayey's central location and its accessibility from Expressway PR 52 have stimulated the development of shopping centers, housing developments and industrial centers.
