Ceiba is the easternmost town of the island of Puerto Rico, not counting the off-shore municipalities ofVieques and Culebra. It is a small town of some 18,000 inhabitants (2000 census), many of which make their living from fishing and related activities. Its neighbors include Fajardo to the north and Naguabo to the south.
The U.S. Navy's Roosevelt Roads base is located in Ceiba. The U.S. Navy has announced its plans to move the base elsewhere. As of January 2004, talks were being held between representatives of the U.S. Navy, the government of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the municipal government of Ceiba over the uses to be made of the land currently used by the base.
The patron saint for Ceiba is "San Antonio de Padua", celebrated on June 13.
