It is difficult to write about Puerto Rico without at least mentioning el coquí, a small tree toad that ranges from a quarter of an inch to an inch in length. Its night song sounds like its name (KoKee, KoKee, KoKee) and can be heard all over Puerto Rico.
The real Coquí is shy and retiring, and its nocturnal habits make it hard to spot in the trees, bushes and fallen leaves where he spends his nights. But you are sure to see, sooner or later, photos, drawings and images of the Coquí on sale at most artisan shops around the island. The most noteworthy of all souvenirs with the Coquí carries the legend "Los Coquís no son verdes, coño" which translates roughly into Coquis are not green, dammit!, in obvious criticism to the many Coquí images painted in green and purchased by uninformed tourists by the thousands.
