About Puerto Rico:

Federal aid

Puerto Rico is a Commonwealth of the United States of America (Estado libre asociado de Puerto Rico). Puerto Ricans are American citizens, subject to serving in the U.S. armed forces and to pay certain U.S. taxes, although specifically exempt from paying Federal income taxes on certain types of income earned in Puerto Rico by residents of Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico's economy has progressed much faster than those of its Caribbean neighbors since the 1940's. However, the average personal income of Puerto Ricans is considerably lower than that of the poorest state in the United States of America.

As a consequence, Federal Aid to Puerto Rico is massive. It is generally the subject of much debate, both locally and in Federal circles.

The Popular Democratic Party, which favors continuation and improvement of the current Commonwealth status, advocates the inclusion of Puerto Rico in more Federal aid projects.

The New Progressive Party wants statehood for Puerto Rico and, with statehood, equal Federal benefits.

The Puerto Rico Independence Party wants independence for Puerto Rico, with a continuation of Federal aid for a number of years afterwards to permit an easy economic transition into independence.
