www.dollarman.com About Puerto Rico: Ferrets (hurones) |
|
Ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) are not endemic to the island of Puerto Rico.
The laws of Puerto Rico prohibit the introduction of ferrets into the island, and also forbid breeding ferrets or keeping them as pets. The main reason that ferrets are banned is because they are potential carriers of the rabies virus. They also have the potential to upset botanical balances on the island if they reproduce in the wild. However, as is the case with most such environment protection laws, there is little action to upholding them. As a result, some ferrets are kept as pets around Puerto Rico.
