Ferrets have been domesticated for the last three thousand years. They are a favorite pet for many people. Ferrets behave like kittens. Their energy, curiosity, and their attachment to humans are some of the factors that influence their popularity. .

The laws of Puerto Rico prohibit the introduction of ferrets into the island, and also forbid breeding ferrets or keeping them as pets. The main reason that ferrets are banned is because they are potential carriers of the rabies virus. They also have the potential to upset botanical balances on the island if they reproduce in the wild.

However, as is the case with most such environment protection laws, there is little action to upholding them. As a result, some ferrets are kept as pets around Puerto Rico.
