Guánica is a small town of some 21,800 inhabitants (2000 census), founded in 1914. It is located in the southwestern coast of Puerto Rico. It calls itself "Pueblo de la Amistad" or Town of Friendship. Guánica's natural resources include some of Puerto Rico's favorite beaches. Bosque Seco, declared International Biospheric Reserve by the United Nations, has some vegetation said to be unique in the world. It is also the home of Sapo Concho, a local frog species known for underground hybernations lasting many years. Twelve separate trails, some of them quite rugged, lead visitors into nesting grounds for over 100 species of birds, coral fossils, land crabs and over 700 species of plants. Hikers are advised to wear adequate hiking garments and carry a plentiful supply of drinking water. There is no admission charge. For visiting hours and additional information, contact (787) 821-5706.

Guánica port was used by the Spaniards to invade the island in 1508 and again by American troops when they, too, invaded the island in 1898. Every year, at the anniversary of the American troop's entrance, demonstrations are held in Guánica by members of all three major political parties in Puerto Rico, to express their respective positions for or against American presence in Puerto Rico.

The patron saint for Guanica is "Santiago Apóstol", celebrated on July 25.
