Hormigueros is a small town just south of Mayagüez on PR State Road # 2 (preferable) or PR State Road 114. It is connected in the south with Cabo Rojo. It also borders in the east with San Germán by PR State Road # 2. Its population had been estimated at 16,600 (2000 census). New housing developments being built in Hormigueros are attracting people from neighboring communities.
A shopping center serving the Mayagüez area is technically located in Hormigueros, which has given this small town a sudden economic windfall from personal and property taxes.
A sanctuary honoring La Virgen de la Monserrate is a favorite tourist stop, especially for Catholic visitors.
Segundo Ruiz Belvis (1829-1867), a native of Hormigueros, is remembered for his efforts to end slavery and achieve independence for Puerto Rico.
The patron saint for Hormigueros is "Nuestra Señora de la Monserrate", celebrated on September 8.
