Lajas, Puerto Rico
The fertile plains of Lajas have made it a likely location for agriculture since its early history. Large sugar cane plantations of the past have made way for grrowing pineapples and minor crops. The pineapples of Lajas are said to be among the best in Puerto Rico. In recent times, many manufacturing plants have moved in, giving a boost to the economy of this town of 26,200 inhabitants (2000 census). Academia San Luis Rey, 787-899-4080, is a bilingual school serving the local population. The patron saint for Lajas is "La Virgen de la Candelaria", celebrated on January 28.
