About Puerto Rico . . .
La Parguera

La Parguera is located on the southwestern coast of Puerto Rico. It is not a separate municipality, but a ward of Lajas. To reach La Parguera, you can drive south on PR Road 116 from Lajas, and then south again on PR Road 304. You can also drive west from Guánica on PR Road 116 and then south on PR Road 304.

La Parguera is one of the most ecologically important regions in Puerto Rico. Its bioluminiscent or phosphorescent bay (Bahía Fosforescente) is one of the most atractive places for tourism and science in Puerto Rico. The bioluminiscence phenomenon is observed at night in the calm bay waters, caused by high concentrations of minute bacteria known as dinoflagellates. Tourist trips are available nightly, ranging from inexpensive group tours to chartered romantic sailboats with wine dinners.

For scuba divers, La Parguera Wall runs for over 20 miles at an average distance of six to seven miles from shore. The Wall drops from about 60 to over 1500 feet, with visibility down to about 150 feet. Water temperature averages from 78 F in winter to 85 F in the summer. The mild Caribbean Sea does not have strong currents or underwater surge is the areas around the Wall. All these features combine to entice divers from all over. For the more cautious or less experienced divers, there are many other dive sites closer to shore. Several local companies can provide everything for the scuba diver, from equipment rental to full charter expeditions. You need to present a valid scuba diving license in order to rent equipment, get oxygen or participate in dives.

A favorite for children and adults alike is Mata La Gata cay. It is a 45-minute boat ride from La Parguera with several boats going back and forth all day. The boat ride is under five dollars round trip and entrance to the tiny island is about 50 cents. There are latrines, a few barbecue pits and seating available on a first come, first served basis. Everyting else you have to bring with you (bottled water, ice, snacks). Next to the pier is a beach, no deeper than six feet, surrounded by a fence to keep large fish out. There is a boardwalk that takes you through a mangrove where thousands of fish of several species find protection from their predators until they are grown enough to go out to sea.

La Playita Rosada, a few minutes drive from town, is the area's favorite beach.

Places to stay include numerous guest houses and many apartments for short-term rentals. Paradores in La Parguera include:

All threee paradores are walking distance from each other, as are most of the restaurants in the area which feature reasonably priced fresh seafood and Puerto Rican cooking.
