Las Marías is a small town of 11,000 inhabitants (2000 census), located in central western Puerto Rico, 2500 meters above sea level. Its name comes from the Maria tree, prized for its wood, which is plentiful in the area. Las Marías is about forty minutes east of Mayagüez on PR Road #106. The town is best known for its crops of citric fruits. Places to stay in Las Marías include Gutiérrez Guest House (787) 827-3100. The patron saint for Las Marías is "La Inmaculada Concepción de María", celebrated on December 8. |
