Luquillo is a coastal town of
19,800 inhabitants
(2000 census), located in northeastern Puerto Rico, about forty-five
minutes east
of San Juan
on PR Road #3. It is about 15 minutes
west of Fajardo
also on PR Road #3. Tourist hotels and resorts in its area include
Wyndham's El Conquistador Resort, Parador Fajardo Inn, Rio Grande
Plantation Eco Resort and the Westin Rio Mar Beach Resort & Country
Club.
Luquillo has two of Puerto Rico's
main
tourist attractions: Luquillo Beach (which appears is most Puerto Rican
tourist
ads), and la Sierra de Luquillo, main portion of El Yunque Caribbean National
Rain Forest. A lesser known but definitely tastier attraction next
to
Luquillo Beach is Los Kioskos. These are
a group of 80 open-air kiosks where all kinds of inexpensive Puerto
Rican light seafood and regular
snacks are sold. Pastelillos, empanadillas, tacos,
bacala&iaccute;tos, arroz con jueyes,
salmorejo, and other delicacies. Recipes for all the above snacks are here. Coco
frío is a whole coconut
which is peeled and
punctured at the top for you to introduce a straw or simply put your
mouth to it. When you have drunk all the exquisite coconut water, the
vendor will split the coconut in two
halves and make a rustic spoon out of a piece of bark for you to eat
the coconut meat.
Something to talk about back home, and a great photo opportunity. Some
adults may want
to drop a shot of Scotch whisky into the coconut for a pleasant "whisky
con coco" drink.
The
patron saint for Luquillo
is "San José",
celebrated on March 19.
