Maunabo, Puerto Rico

Maunabo is a small coastal town in the southeastern corner of Puerto Rico. Its neighbors are Yabucoa in the north and Patillas in the west, both along PR road #3. The roads leading to Maunabo are hilly, twisty and narrow, which makes it uncomfortable to travel to Maunabo. Even so, its quiet beaches and excellent sea food make Maunabo a favorite destination of many people from neighboring vicinities.

The patron saints for Maunabo are "San Isidro". Patron saints day is celebrated onMay 15th. Festival Jueyero (land crab festival) attracts tourists from all around the island.

Parador Palmas de Lucía is located midway between Yabucoa and Maunabo - (787) 893-4423. Rooms with air conditioning, cable tv. Swimming pool. Rates (which may have changed - call first) range from about $74 per night for a single or double, to $92 per night for a suite for two persons. The Parador is minutes away from Palmas del Sol Resort and Casino .

A well-known landmark around Maunabo is El Faro Punta Tune, a 19th Century lighthouse, which for decades had been utilized by the U.S. Coast Guard. In February 2006, it was announced that the structure and surrounding lands would be transferred by Federal Authorities to the government of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Plans are underway to renovate the area and develop it in an effort to attract tourism to the area. Maunabo has many snack kiosks and seafood restaurants along its beaches. Prices are reasonable and the seashore areas are very pleasant.
