Municipalities in Puerto Rico

In Puerto Rico, services are provided to communities by municipal governments. These services normally include garbage collection, street paving and filling of potholes, primary health services and civil defense. Some municipalities provide a municipal police force. Other services may include daycare centers, services for the aging, economic development programs, economic assistance.

The Mayor (Alcalde) is the chief executive officer, elected by popular vote in elections held every four years, coinciding with the general elections in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and with Presidential elections in the United States of America. The Municipal Assembly is composed, starting with the 1996 elections, of between thirteen and twenty-three persons, depending upon the size of the municipality, also elected for terms of four years.

There are 78 municipalities in Puerto Rico, including the island-municipalities of Vieques and Culebra.
