Plaza Las Américas Shopping Center, near the geographical center of the San Juan Metropolitan Area, is the largest shopping center in the Caribbean. It was opened to the public in 1968 and has had square footage added several times since. Sears has a three-story department store and a two-story home center. JC Penney and Macy's both have huge department stores. It is said that the JC Penney store at Plaza Las Américas is frequently the top selling store in the whole JC Penney chain. In addition, there are almost 200 specialty stores, banks, cinemas, restaurants, a bowling alley and fast food outlets. It also has an extensive area for professional offices.

Plaza Las Américas is also a frequent sponsor of exhibits and other cultural activities. English-speaking clerks are available at most shops. Major credit cards are accepted throughout. A recent trend at shopping malls is to issue the mall's own credit card, which is also accepted at most places throughout the mall.

Plaza Las Americas has ample free parking facilities. Mall hours are generally between 9:30 AM and 9:00 PM except Sundays and on local holidays when store hours are established by local laws. Call Mall Management at (787) 767-1525 to learn mall hours for any particular date.

Private guards are stationed at lookout towers throughout the parking area. However, don't feel overconfident. Observe the same precautionary measures as you would keep anywhere else. Valet parking is available at this and other large malls with fees starting at around five dollars. You can find most of the better-known U.S. and international brands of products.
