Ponce Ponce
is Puerto Rico's largest city outside the San Juan Metropolitan area
with a population estimated at 189,000. Ponce is said to have been
founded in 1692, although it was officially recognized as a city in
1877. It features a renovated urban center with exquisite centuries-old
buildings, and streets paved in cobblestones in the area surrounding
the Main Square or Plaza de Ponce.

Rosario Santiago (1942-2004) died on January 17, 2004 of a
brain hemorraghe. He had been city mayor since 1988. On October 21, 2003, Ponce had also
mourned the death of Luis A. Ferré, former governor of Puerto
Rico. Ferré was 99 years old at the time of his death. He had
been

Ponce is around two hours away from San Juan, in normal traffic,
through the
Expreso Luis A FerrŽ, a well-maintained toll expressway (PR Road 52).
Ponce is also reached by airplane from San Juan into Aeropuerto
Mercedita in the outskirts of Ponce. It is also being considered as a
dock for some of the tourist ships that cruise the Caribbean. A major
economic development aims to establish a super-port in Ponce and
surrounding vicinities. This is expected to increase commercial vessel
traffic in this area considerably.
Museo de Arte de Ponce is
one of the
most renowned museums in the Caribbean, with over 1000 paintings and
400 sculptures. These include classical, ancient and contemporary art.
The museum opens daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Entrance fees are

Centro Ceremonial Indígena
Tibes (Tibes Indian Ceremonial Center) is located in the
outskirts of the city of Ponce, just a few minutes away from the Ponce
Main Square (Plaza de Ponce). Tibes holds the remains of an Indian
community which was discovered in recent years. It includes a life-size
facsimile of an actual Taíno village, and also the sites
utilized by the Indians for various public activities. A guided tour
lasts about one hour. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for a
one-hour stroll in the outdoors. English speaking guides are available
on request. Admission is about $3.00 person. Parking is available.
Facilities include a simple cafeteria, restrooms, small ‘museum’ and
strolling areas. Reservations are usually not required. The park is

Nightlife
The larger hotels and
resorts feature pubs, restaurants, casinos, artistic shows and other
night entertainment. The free tourist guides available at most tourist
stops are usually a good source of to-the-minute information on current
activities.
La Guancha,
Tablado La Guancha, a boardwalk and marina recently completed, draws
both native and foreign tourists day and night. The patron saint for Ponce is
"Nuestra Señora de la Guadalupe ", celebrated on December 12.
