Water, aqueduct and sewer services are the responsibility of the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (Autoridad de Acueductos y Alcantarillados). In recent years, private contractors provide the managerial and operational services while the governmental authority exercises supervisory power over the contractors. Service is available 24/7 at 787-620-2482 (metro area) and 1-877-411-2482 toll-free from the remainder of the island. Some services may be requested online at http://www.acueductospr.com.

The agency is reputed to be the governmental agency against which the largest number of complaints are filed yearly for poor service. Complaints are filed at Office of the Ombudsman (Oficina del Procurador del Ciudadano), (787) 724-7373.

Many residents have added any of a number of water filtering systems to their home's water supply for added protection. Most of the large department stores and some specialized establishments feature water filtering system sales, installation and repair services. It seems advisable to use filtered water for human consumption needs, including brushing your teeth.

Many people have also installed reserve water tanks to provide for interruptions of service.
