Most first-time and many frequent visitors seem to prefer the conveniences offered by the major tourist hotels and resorts, both in San Juan and around the island. However, prices are steep, particularly during the tourist season which runs from November to April. The main tourist activity is generally centered around the Condado-Isla Verde-Old San Juan area. All three sectors are part of the San Juan Metropolitan Area. See the section on SHOPPING for a description of those sectors.

Facilities available for this purpose include guest houses and paradores. Paradores are government-approved smaller hotels (inns) scattered throughout the island. They provide basic hotel services at prices considerably below the comparative prices of tourist hotels. Vacation centers ( centros vacacionales) are government-operated resorts in Boquerón (Cabo Rojo), Punta Santiago (Humacao), Monte del Estado (Maricao) and Punta Guilarte (Arroyo).

Balnearios are public, government-operated beaches. Most have areas reserved for pitching a tent for overnight camping, with minimal facilities available for campers.

There are several lesser-priced overnight hotels (hostels) in the San Juan Metropolitan Area, many of them located minutes away from the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport. Prices normally range between $47 and $74 per night. Prices are subject to change without notice. Reservations are strongly suggested! Some of these are:
