Yauco , founded in 1756, is a town of approximately 48,000, located in the south-western of Puerto Rico. Yauco borders the Caribbean sea on its southernmost part, while the north is located high in the mountains. It is reputed to produce some of the best coffee in Puerto Rico in its mountains.
Its neighbors include Guayanilla to the east and Sábana Grande to the west, both on PR Road 2.
Río Loco, one of Yauco's three main rivers, owes its name to the fact that periods of heavy rainfall will make it overflow its natural course, causing flash floods in various places along the city. Lago Loco, just west of Yauco, is a manmade lake, used to generate electricity. It is seeded with largemouth bass, peacock bass, bluegill sunfish, guavinas, catfish and tilapias.
Lago Lucchetti, north of Yauco, is much larger than Lago Loco, and is also used to generate electricity. It is also very good for fishing. It should be noted that swimming in Puerto Rican lakes or rivers may expose the swimmers to bilharzia, a disease caused by a parasite that lodges in the host's kidneys and liver, causing anemia and weakening the body's defenses and immune system.
People from all over the island and foreign tourists as well have enjoyed "chuletas cancán", the featured entree at Rest. Guardarraya, a small eatery one mile out from the city.
Yauco's main Hospital is Hospital Dr. Tito Mattei.
There is also a local newspaper in Yauco, El Cronista Interactivo, available online at http://personal.isla.net/cronista/ .
The patron saint for Yauco is "Nuestra Señora del Rosario", celebrated on October 7.
