Resumes

Today is the most important day in your life. Please make the most of it!

HOW TO WRITE THE KILLER RESUME!

A Killer Resume should achieve two purposes: keep you away from unwanted jobs and set you up for the most rewarding position available to you. If possible, have your Mother write your resume. There are things only a Mother could say about her child! And those may be just the things you need to say . . .

Finding a job, pairing off with a mate, purchasing a home: these are all things that require hard work, if you want to do them right, and have them serve your purposes for a long time. To find a job, in today's highly competitive environment, you need: a killer resume.

So, how will you write your killer resume? You need objectives: a killer resume is aimed at obtaining a specific job and uses any resources necessary to achieve it.

  1. Of course, in order to aim at a specific job, you must first decide what job you want. It's not enough to say that you want to work for IBM because it is the best employer around. You should be able to say that you want a job as computer field engineer trainee with IBM because it is in line with your talents and with your plans for future personal development. The time you spend researching a job offer or job opportunities within a company may prove very rewarding. Learn something about the job you want. Visit the company's website. Visit the company itself, if possible. Try to contact company employees in Chat Rooms. Be prepared to discuss the specific job intelligently, on short notice, with your interviewer.

  2. Catch and hold someone's attention. Otherwise, your resume may end up at the bottom of a pile or, still worse, in somebody's trash can. Your resume will be competing with many, many others. The better the job you want, the more people who will be trying to get it. How do you make your resume stand out among many? Think of your resume as a musical greeting card among a pile of common picture postcards. It must invite attention. In a two-page resume world, make yours one page. Or, if you really have enough content, make yours ten pages long, in very thick paper. If they all must be single-page, enclose yours in an attractive binder. How about using paper, ink and design very similar to the company's letterhead? Most resumes start with the person's same. An eye-catching resume might have, as its introductory line, a statement of what you want: I trained to be a leader in my class, in my field and in your company. I seek the professional challenge, the financial rewards, and the benefits package that your company represents. In exchange, I offer this summary of my achievements to date. Be bold! Your resume should be an extension of your personality. Be daring! You have everything to gain, practically nothing to lose.

  3. Sell your image! Tailor the resume to the job and tailor your image to the job description. The position being offered is that of East Coast sales agent for a manufacturer of sports equipment. You have ten years work experience as internal auditor for a shoe manufacturer. You have been a volunteer basketball coach for a team of eight-year-olds for the last four years. Guess, just guess, which of those two activities should be highlighted in some way in your resume. Imagine how much more enthusiasm you can build around your resume when the reader realizes you are a sports person, just what they're looking for!

  4. Dont't waste your time with the wrong job! Do your homework: research the job offers thoroughly. If you are really looking for a $90,000 job, be sure that you are not spending your time answering $40,000 ads. Learn to read between the lines of want ads. If the ad says No Experience Required and you have three years' experience, that's probably in your favor; if you have 15 years' experience, you are probably overqualified for the position. ABOVE ALL: Do not send your resume in reply to a $40,000 want ad simply because you know the company also has positions in the $90,000 range. The message that you may be transmitting to the prospective employer is unclear.

  5. Read all the modern resume writing techniques. Learn all about Action Words, Direct Messages, Cover Letters, Follow-up Letters, Reply Letters. Learn about identifying and presenting your achievements. All those are the things being done by the most perseverant among your rivals for the job. Hence, you not only need to consider all the modern techniques: you also need to be unique in your killer resume.

Remembering your need to be unique, try to isolate one special quality in yourself: most likely, something that other people will say about you very often. (Pushy, go-getter, steadfast, early bird, by-the-rules person, a very long etcetera). Once you hit upon the quality, shop around for the best possible synonyms until you reach the right one. Then consider your opening statement: I am frequently described as a person of principles and moral values. My character requires that I be loyal to my employer, reliable and trustworthy. I will bring these personal traits to my position within ABC Company.

There will be reinforcement of that statement if the company follows up with character reference requests. Consistence works in your favor.
